For the last MedTalk this semester we had the great honor of welcoming Michael Leunig Chief physician of hip surgery and CMO of the Schulthess clinic, Marianne Bugmann CFO, and Mareike Niels chief of staff to the CMO, as our key speakers. The talk combined insights into the day-to-day life of a chief physician, the financing of the Schulthess clinic and generally the health care sector, and the advancements and job opportunities within the Schulthess.

Being one of the leading orthopaedic clinics worldwide, the Schulthess clinic is centered around the musculoskeletal system, which also includes neurology, rheumatology and sports medicine. “Focus on the patient” is the aim which is set to be achieved by the Schulthess clinic and is being realized with enhanced patient surveys, to ensure patient well-being. Additionally, quality is ensured through involvement in renowned research teams and development of for example implants and prosthetics. Especially interesting to see however, was the actual schedule of Prof.Dr. Michael Leunig, which really gave us the opportunity to glimpse into the day-to-day life of a chief physician. Adding onto that, Mareike Niels explained the further education opportunities.

Finally, Marianne Bugmann shed light into the financing aspects of the health care system in Switzerland on a national and cantonal level. The concepts were made tangible in a very interactive way and with a coding example of the SwissDRG, a new tariff system for stationary acute-somatic hospital services.
